Welcome to another Magnificent Monday Message.
Question: How full is your cup? Full, about halfway or mostly empty?
It is not selfish to refill your own cup, so that you can pour into others. It’s not just a selfish luxury, it is essential.
I was brought up as many of you were in a community that was all about giving selfless service to others. “Go forward and serve!” was the motto. Don’t get me wrong, service to others is wonderful but I was never taught that it was okay to take care and serve myself too. I would often find myself physically, emotionally, and spiritually exhausted with no end in sight.
Dropping into bed at night exhausted and waking up in the morning exhausted was no way to live. I have discovered a few things along the way.
I found that if I could get away even for an hour or so a week by myself or with my spouse, I could be a much better mom, wife, and friend. You really must make yourself a priority! Put some time for you on the calendar of your busy schedule. Something that will nourish you, not just things on your already heaping full to-do-list. Here are some ideas.
- Read a book or watch a movie you enjoy
- Unplug from your phone (this is a hard one. Try 15 minutes at a time)
- Write in your gratitude journal
- Take a class for fun
- Eat something you really enjoy (Chocolate for me)
- Go for a walk
- Spend some time outside in nature
- Try a new restaurant
- Visit a friend just to catch up
- Soak in the tub
Filling your own cup does not have to be expensive or time consuming, but it is crucial.
